Glossary
Abseiling: To descend
from a steep height by use of a static rope and abseiling
devices including figure of eights, carrabiners and
a harness.
Adventure Activities: An unusual and
exciting experience or series of activities involving
some risk.
Alpine: Intended for or concerned with
mountaineering and various snow sports including skiing,
snow shoeing and snow boarding.
Camping: To shelter or lodge in a camping
ground using tents. Usually in National Parks or coastal
regions.
Canoeing: A light, open, slender boat
that is propelled by paddles. An activity usually taken
place in a river or lake.
Canyoning: Activities involving a journey
through a deep gorge or ravine with steep sides, cut
through rock by a river over millions of years. Usually
involving several techniques, such as climbing, abseiling,
swimming and hiking.
Caving/Speleology: the pastime of exploring
caves carved out over millions of years in limestone.
Crampons: A spiked metal framework,
attached to the bottom of a shoe or boot to aid in traversing
or climbing on ice and snow.
Documentary: A work, such as a film
or television program, presenting political, social,
environmental or historical subject matter in a factual
and informative manner and often consisting of actual
news films or interviews accompanied by narration.
Ecotourism/Eco-tourism: Tourism involving
travel to areas of natural or ecological interest, typically
under the guidance of conservationist, naturalist and
environmentally friendly tour operators, for the purpose
of observing wildlife and learning about nature and
the environment.
Extreme Sports: Very dangerous or difficult
sports. Participating in adrenalin rushing sports enhancing
the excitement of the experience.
Freediving: The ability to hold ones
breath for extended periods of time and descend to depths
without the assistance of any breathing apparatus.
Hiking/Trekking: To journey on foot
for exercise or pleasure, especially to hike through
mountainous areas.
Ice Climbing: The sport or activity
of climbing frozen waterfalls, especially by means of
specialized techniques and equipment, such as ice axes
and crampons.
Kayaking: A journey undertaken using
a lightweight craft similar in design to a canoe covered
with watertight skirts with a single or double opening
in the center, and propelled by a double-bladed paddle.
Mountaineering: The climbing of mountains
for sport, usually incorporating the skills of rock
climbing and climbing on ice.
Mountain biking: Of road biking over
numerous terrains.
Outdoor Recreation: Refreshment of
one's mind or body through outdoor activity that amuses
or stimulates.
Photo Essays/Photojournalism: Journalism
that presents a story primarily through the use of pictures.
Documentary evidence of an experience or event.
Portal: A website considered as a gateway
to a multitude of information targeting a specific audience
or community. Digital Antarctica is a portal for all
adventure and ecotourism related activities.
Rogaining: Rogaining is the sport of
long distance cross-country navigation, in which teams
of two to five people visit as many checkpoints as they
wish in a set time period.
Rock Climbing: The sport or activity
of climbing sheer rock faces, especially by means of
specialized techniques and equipment, including harnesses,
carrabiners, and dynamic ropes.
Scuba Diving: The sport using a portable
apparatus containing compressed air for breathing under
water to explore the underwater world.
Skiing: To travel or glide over snow
on skis for activities including Cross country and downhill
skiing.
Skydiving: To jump and fall freely
from an airplane, performing various maneuvers before
pulling the ripcord of a parachute.
Whale Watching: To observe whales in
the wild, participating in various above and below the
surface activities, including breaching, tail slapping,
feeding, spy hopping and various other characteristic
behaviours.
Whitewater Rafting: the sport or activity
of paddling down river rapids in a fla tbottom inflatable
craf.
